A conversation on Race and the Church

On September 21, Drew Hart and Ben Walter presented a conversation on race and the church at Germantown Historic Meetinghouse in Philadelphia.  This conversation connected Anabaptist and Black Theologies and identified areas in which churches participate in both institutionalized racism as well as acts of micro aggression. Listen to the podcast.

Read reflections on this conversation from two men in very different walks of life: Mikah, a biracial young adult who is working with students in north Philadelphia, and Firman, a white pastor of over twenty-five years, ministering in a prosperous, rural setting.

Notes to Pastors

Don’t forget your God@Work video for Conference Assembly!

How is God Still@Work in your context?  Each day, God shows up and does what only God can do – transforms us.  How is that transformation taking place around you? Would you share your story/God’s story?  Shared stories encourage, inspire and give us a view beyond ourselves.

This year at Conference Assembly, we will be sharing videos of God Still@Work in our midst. We invite each congregation and Conference Related Ministry to contribute a short video. It can be something produced and edited with music or simply a short video recorded on your phone–anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?! See these videos for two examples of the different kind of videos you can submit, then create your own and submit it in one of three ways:

  1. Upload it to Youtube or Vimeo and email us the link.
  2. Email the video directly (if it’s a small file, like one recorded on a phone).
  3. Upload the video to Dropbox and share the link with Emily.

Sistering: The Ties that Bind (Without Strangling)

Once again the women of Eastern District and Franconia Mennonite Conferences are invited to gather together for a time of listening, learning, and sharing. “Sistering:  The Ties that Bind (Without Strangling)” will be held at the Souderton Mennonite Church on Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

We will be exploring the theological and practical implications of the carpentry term “sistering,” meaning to come alongside of and support another.  Bring stories of being sistered or sistering others both locally and globally. Our speakers will also be sharing about how we can sister one another without strangling either the other or ourselves. Small group sharing will allow time for us to get to know one another better and learn how we can sister each other right here. A time of worship will invite the Spirit to lead and guide us as we seek to be Jesus to one another.

Register online at www.women.franconiaconference.org or contact Anne Yoder at 610-259-9838 or ayoder1@swarthmore.edu.  There is a $10 registration fee payable at the door. No childcare is available. Refreshments will be served.
