Nueva Vida Norristown New Life

Norristown congregation celebrates new life

On the day that their meetinghouse and office building, New Life Plaza, was scheduled to be sold at sheriff’s sale, members and friends of Nueva Vida Norristown New Life gathered for a celebration.  Instead of an impending foreclosure, the congregation experienced God’s miraculous intervention and, on the evening of December 18th, they met to worship, pray, testify, and burn the sheriff sale signs. Becoming a Church Invested in Racial Justice

Ewuare Osayande, anti-oppression coordinator for Mennonite Central Committee, joined us Thursday for a pastors breakfast entitled "Proactive Pastorship: On Becoming a Church Invested in Racial Justice." Ewuare challenged congregational leaders to understand the concept of "race:" a social construct emerging out of colonialism and slavery.  Once congregations understand race, they can begin to have a conversation about racism and the impact racism has had on all people. I tend to be fairly cautious about most Christian conferences.  At the risk of sounding overly-skeptical, I’m not thoroughly convinced of the long-term benefit of such events, and wonder if they don’t play into a kind of consumerism within the Christian sub-culture of the West: lots of marketing, lots of money, lots of “celebrity Christians,” lots of glossy pamphlets and slick websites.  Read more….

  • (FB) Whitehall Mennonite Church added new photos to 2014 January Ebenezer Sunday. This is WMC 4th year in celebrating an Ebenezer Stone – "Stone of Help."
  • (FB) Penn View Christian School (photo album) With the help of Dock International student Eddy Arango, Mrs. Schroeder’s 6th grade Spanish class got to interact with students in Colombia via Skype. What a fun and practical way to use their Spanish language skills!
  • (photo) Philadephia Praise Center’s Steve Sampurna, also a student at Eastern University, led a class on food heritage as part of PPC’s afterschool program.

Janna Hunter-BowmanJanna Hunter-Bowman appointed at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

Janna Hunter-Bowman will join the AMBS faculty in summer 2015 as assistant professor of peace studies and social ethics. She is completing her PhD at the University of Notre Dame. She also earned a Master of Arts: Peace Studies from AMBS. Hunter-Bowman grew up in Bally (Pa.) congregation.

Photo ID Clinic in Norristown

The next Photo ID Clinic is Saturday, January 25, 10 a.m.–12 noon at the New Life Plaza, 25 E Marshall St, Norristown. Please help spread the word with these two flyers, and any announcements you can do via web pages, emails, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

We are reaching out to those who need help obtaining IDs and other identity documents for job applications, housing, bank accounts, medical services, etc. We continue to follow the court hearings on the need for voter IDs.  

We can also prepare 2011–2013 tax returns and submit applications for social/safety net services such as SNAP, LiHEAP, PACE and PACENET, and FAFSA through The Benefit Bank. The Benefit Bank services (www.thebenefitbank.org) are free. They are also available at the New Life Internet Café, 19 West Marshall St, on a regular basis.
