Feedback Requested on MCUSA resolution “Seeking Peace in Israel and Palestine

The writing team for the Israel and Palestine resolution is requesting your feedback. We encourage you to provide feedback and counsel by December 20, 2016. See the resolution here. Complete the Feedback Form here.

Historically, we as Mennonites are known as a peace church. For over 65 years Mennonites have been involved in the Middle East seeking to live out our peace church heritage. After the holocaust many welcomed the creation of the state of Israel, seen as a safe haven for Jews. Yet, along with the creation of the state of Israel came the oppression and deportation of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the destruction of hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages. As Mennonites we stand for the peace of all people.

Our Article 22 of the Confession of Faith states, “We believe that peace is the will of God. God created the world in peace, and God’s peace is most fully revealed in Jesus Christ, who is our peace and the peace of the whole world. Led by the Holy Spirit, we follow Christ in the way of peace, doing justice, bringing reconciliation, and practicing nonresistance even in the face of violence and warfare…As followers of Jesus, we participate in his ministry of peace and justice. He has called us to find our blessing in making peace and seeking justice.”

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine continues to be complex and difficult to navigate. As a conference we are committed to standing with peacemakers, Israeli and Palestinian alike. We are working to educate ourselves on the conflict and how best we can seek and assist in creating peace and justice in the region. Here are some resources that aid in this endeavor:

Franconia Conference Taskforce:

At the 2015 Franconia Conference Assembly the delegates affirmed The Franconia Conference Church Together Statement on Israel/Palestine. The statement says “the intended consequence of this statement [is] to educate ourselves about the people of Israel-Palestine and their problems, and thereby to prepare our congregations, pastors, and delegates to evaluate intelligently the longer [MCUSA] resolution, called “Israel- Palestine” that was tabled until Convention 2017.” In order to help equipp the conference a taskforce was formed.

The taskforce currently includes Andrew Bush (Methacton), Ed Brubaker (Souderton), Preston Bush (Salford), Lynelle Bush (Salford), Jeff Hackman (Plains), Mike Merryman-Lotz (Ambler), Peder Wiegner (Norristown), and their staff liaison is John Stoltzfus.  They are still looking for additional members and would love to hear from anyone who has been on a Come and See Tour.
