Annie FunkOn ‘Titanic’ centennial, missionary’s life remembered

When Annie Clemmer Funk, a Mennonite missionary to India, learned her mother was very ill in Pennsylvania, she quickly packed her bags and caught a train to Bombay. From there she traveled to England, where she learned a coal strike had delayed her ship’s voyage to the U.S.

So she paid a few extra gold pieces for a spot on the Titanic, which set sail two days later.   Read more. . . .

STEP Pastoral Training Expanding

The STEP pastoral training program looks to grow in 2012 by forming two new cohorts of students simultaneously in both Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pa. for fall semester.

“Starting two cohorts of STEP students in one year signals another adventure for us,” remarked Mark R. Wenger, STEP program director.  “We are very pleased to see how STEP is addressing the urgent need for basic high-quality pastoral training of those in congregational leadership.”   Read more . . . .

Under Suspicion: Stories from the Red Tent

TrayvonBoth of my kids like to wear hoodies. I’ve never really understood the hoodie thing—I’m more of a hat and scarf person myself.    But they wear them like they are a uniform.

I’ve been glad for the beautiful and warm weather this week, but mostly glad to get rid of those hoodies.  Not because I don’t like them, but because they have begun to represent the story of Trayvon Martin. Read more . . . .

  • 8-10 a.m. at the Mennonite Conference Center (unless noted).  $6 donation requested.

  • July 18: Equipping to minister to inmates and ex-offenders in your congregation and community, led by Liberty Ministries.

Training for all Credentialed Leaders of Franconia Conference

  • WHEN: Saturday, April 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • WHERE: Towamencin Mennonite Church
  • WHAT: This day will focus on increasing our understanding of what it means to be intercultural and our capacity to respond to differences in our congregations—generational, economic, gender, etc.  There will also be important information shared about Formation Expectations and Requirements for Credentialed Leaders.  Full description.

Fresh Expressions Vision Day

  • WHEN: Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • WHERE: Plains Mennonite Church
  • WHAT: This will be an interactive time for congregations to learn about Fresh Expressions as well as dream and discover how to empower and equip God’s people to develop creative expressions of church that can reach the increasing diversity in their communities.  Full description.
