KrisAnne Swartley

The travels of a missional minister

by KrisAnne Swartley, Doylestown congregation

I am grateful for Doylestown leadership’s blessing to travel March 24-29. My first stop was at Eastern Mennonite University for three days. I met with various campus leaders including President Loren Swartzentruber, athletic director Dave King and undergraduate campus pastor Lana Miller, as well as several professors in both the college and seminary. A lesson from Rwanda

by Dennis Edwards, credentialed pastor serving in Minneapolis

I recently spent several days in Rwanda as part of a teaching team for the Shepherd’s Leadership Conference, a weeklong conference for Rwandese pastors and other church leaders. There is much to share, especially having been there so close to the 20th anniversary of the genocide. Read more….

New (reading and) Learning Community: A book group on The New Jim Crow

Pastors and lay leaders of all kinds – you’re invited to read and join in discussing The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. The New York Review of Books says: “Now and then a book comes along that might in time touch the public and educate social commentators, policymakers, and politicians about a glaring wrong that we have been living with that we also somehow don’t know how to face…”

Groups will meet in varied locations depending on interest.  Meetings will begin in May and run through June.  To encourage participation, we will not move strictly sequentially through the book, so you may come to as many meetings as you can, prepared to share what has stood out to you in your reading. Only requirements are to read the book and engage with openness to transformation!  Sign up with Samantha Lioi at: samantha@interculturalchurch.com. Study guides provided. Check out http://newjimcrow.com/ for much more on this significant book for our time.

Would your church or region of churches like to host international guests?

One of the highlights of Mennonite World Conference global assemblies has been Assembly Scattered events.

These are opportunities for the local churches on the continent where the global assembly is held to host Anabaptist brothers and sisters from other churches in their own churches and communities.

Plans are being made for Assembly Scattered events throughout North America as part of Pennsylvania 2015. Groups of churches in communities around North America are invited to apply to be an Assembly Scattered location and host Pennsylvania 2015 participants either before or after the Assembly Gathered event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that takes place from July 21-26, 2015.

Representative of churches in North America who are interested in hosting an Assembly Scattered event in July 2015 must register before June 1, 2014. For more information click here

Instituto Biblico Anabautista fundraising Sunday

Sunday, April 27 has been named IBA Sunday by IBA tutors. Your congregation is invited to join in a church-wide fundraising effort for Instituto Bíblico Anabautista (Anabaptist Biblical Institute) the last weekend of April. By joining in you will be supporting leadership education for Hispanic Mennonites. You may also take this opportunity to become an annual IBA sponsor. Churches and small groups are encouraged to find creative ways to raise monies for IBA. Some possible activities might be a garage sale, a bake sale, a fund-raiser meal, a special offering or another idea that fits your small group or congregation.

Every gift helps. Tuition covers less than a third of the actual cost of providing Hispanic Pastoral and Leadership Education for more than 300 students every year. IBA has been blessed by many supportive congregations and individual gifts this year and wants to express its thanks.
